Beta Kappa Mu began as a quiet knowing.
I knew what it felt like to move through campus spaces as a Black Muslim woman, present, capable, and engaged, yet never fully reflected in the rooms that promised belonging. It wasn’t a lack of opportunity that held me back. It was the absence of a space that allowed me to show up whole.
I didn’t want to create something reactionary.
I wanted to build something intentional.
Beta Kappa Mu was founded with the belief that women should never have to fragment themselves to belong, not their faith, not their culture, not their ambition. This sorority was imagined as a space where identity is honored, leadership is nurtured, and sisterhood is rooted in purpose rather than performance.
Starting BKM required courage, faith, and community. There was no roadmap, only conviction and the belief that if this space didn’t exist, it was worth building.
My hope is that every woman who finds her way here feels what I once searched for:
belonging without compromise.
Beta Kappa Mu is bigger than me. It always was.
It belongs to every woman who carries its values forward, who leads with integrity, and who chooses to create space for others.
May this sisterhood continue to grow with intention.
May it remain grounded in service and authenticity.
And may the flame that started it never dim.
With purpose,
Siham Hassan
