Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at info@bkmsorority.org if you cannot find an answer to your question.

A sorority is a values-based women’s organization centered on sisterhood, leadership development, service, and lifelong community. Traditionally, sororities provide members with opportunities for personal growth, connection, mentorship, and civic engagement.

At its core, a sorority is about belonging and shared purpose — not appearances or stereotypes.

Beta Kappa Mu is a Muslim-founded sorority built on intention, inclusivity, and values.

Unlike traditional social sororities, BKM:

  • Centers purpose over popularity
  • Prioritizes service, leadership, and mentorship
  • Creates a faith-conscious, identity-affirming space
  • Welcomes women of all backgrounds who align with our values

BKM was created to be a space where women do not have to compromise who they are to belong.

Beta Kappa Mu (BKM) is the first Muslim-founded sorority at Michigan State University. We are a sisterhood rooted in the values of SALAM: Service, Advocacy, Leadership, Authenticity, and Mentorship. While founded on Muslim values, BKM is open to all women who share our vision of empowerment, community, and service.

No. Membership is open to all women — Muslim and non-Muslim — who share our values of service, leadership, authenticity, advocacy, and mentorship.

BKM is Muslim-founded and faith-conscious, meaning our values are informed by Islamic principles such as service, justice, and community care. However, the organization is not religiously exclusive and does not require members to practice any faith.

BKM is a values-based sorority that blends sisterhood, service, leadership development, and professional growth. While social connection is an important part of our community, it is not the sole focus.

Michigan/Lansing community. We focus on working with local nonprofits, high schools, and cultural organizations to create lasting impact. Our outreach centers around uplifting women, supporting youth, and strengthening community connections.

  • Service projects with local nonprofits and schools.
  • Professional development workshops and networking opportunities.
  • Cultural and social events that celebrate identity and build sisterhood.
  •  Campus collaborations with other organizations to amplify impact.

Membership is open to all women, Muslim and non-Muslim, who share our values and commitment to leadership, service, and community. We welcome women from all majors, backgrounds, and walks of life.

BKM was founded to create a safe, empowering space for women to embrace their authentic selves, build lifelong sisterhood, and develop as leaders. We saw the need for a sorority where Muslim women, and allies of all backgrounds, could feel seen, heard, and supported while making a positive impact on campus and beyond.

Service is a core pillar of Beta Kappa Mu. Members participate in community service and philanthropic initiatives through partnerships with local organizations and our primary philanthropic partner, Najwa Foundation.

Membership dues are $350 per semester. These fees go directly toward funding events, programming, community service projects, member materials (such as jackets and pins), and scholarships. We believe in reinvesting dues back into meaningful experiences for our members.

Joining BKM means becoming part of a historic sisterhood. Benefits include:

  • A supportive community and lifelong friendships.
  • Opportunities for leadership development and mentorship.
  • Professional growth and resume-building experiences.
  • Participation in impactful service and advocacy initiatives.
  • A space to celebrate your authentic identity and uplift others.

Members can expect to participate in weekly or biweekly chapter meetings, service projects, and social events. We aim to balance sorority life with academics and personal commitments. While requirements may vary by semester, members should plan to dedicate a few hours per week to BKM. Some service hours may be required each semester, depending on our projects and partnerships.

We rush in the fall and spring semesters.
